Subject: Equal Potential Deserves Equal Funding

Message:

I am writing to you today as a constituent and a member of the charter public school community. The charter public schools of our great Commonwealth are public, tuition-free, and open to all, and serve a diverse population of over 45,000 promising students. As a charter public school supporter, I firmly believe that every child possesses unlimited potential and that that potential deserves equal funding. Currently, a student attending a charter public school receives $761 less for educational facilities than a student attending a district school. This funding gap has led charter public schools to divert approximately 10-15% of their operating budgets out of the classroom in order to pay for buildings. These are funds that would otherwise be invested in the curriculum, educators, and opportunities that our young people - our future leaders - deserve. Therefore, I am writing today to kindly ask you to address this inequity. I was thrilled to learn that both the Governor and House FY23 budgets increased the charter public schools facilities rate from $938 to $1,088 per pupil (in line 7061-9010), and tied the rate to inflation moving forward. I ask that you please ensure that this increase is included in the FY23 Senate budget. I also ask that when making this adjustment, you fully fund the charter reimbursement line item to ensure all public schools have the resources they need to help students thrive. This $150 increase will enable our Commonwealth to make meaningful progress toward reducing the existing disparity in facilities funding, while also ensuring that all Massachusetts children are being educated in safe facilities that support robust educational opportunities.
